Modeling Wastewater Treatment Using Integrated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Biokinetics, and Size-Dependent Intra-Floc Diffusion

Abstract

Models are crucial tools for modern wastewater treatment design and two of the most essential types are computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and biokinetic models, such as the Activated Sludge Model 1 (ASM1). CFD and biokinetic models have complementary strengths and weaknesses. We believe we can get the best of both worlds via their integration into a tool which also accounts for the effect of the micro-floc environment on biological reactions. We have developed an implementation based on an open source OpenFOAM pipeline which demonstrates that such an integration is feasible while remaining computationally tractable. Further, we employed a physical bench-scale reactor, operated under three different loading rates, to both calibrate and validate the model. The results of the validation study suggest that accounting for particle size may be worthwhile and indicate potential avenues for greater predictive accuracy.
