Chris has over 30 years of experience in wastewater treatment, including process evaluations, troubleshooting, pilot testing, and treatment plant design. She is a licensed operator, having worked for 9 years at a large treatment plant with stringent nutrient limits. Chris has also been active in research and application considerations for next-generation nitrogen removal processes such as PdNA, manipulation of liquid and solids processes for optimization of carbon content for nutrient removal and digestion, and practices for optimizing operations and training including O&M engagement during design.

Approaches for Leveraging Technology for O&M Centered Designs

Abstract

Over the past two decades, there have been significant advances in 3-dimensional (3D) design tools, moving from hand drawn 2-dimensional drawings, to computer aided design, to early 3D models that were primarily applied to new structures/facilities, to multi-dimensional building information models (BIM), and to development of design models for modifications to existing facilities built from 3D laser scanning technologies. With the focus on BIM, these tools go well beyond 3D graphics and integrate and connect design data and equipment information for almost real-time synchronized design coordination (Figure 1). These capabilities are gradually being leveraged beyond designs to support transfer of information from the as-built design to asset management and even development of digital twins. For example, overlaying operations information into the context of the 3D model provides a valuable way to spatially understand and plan for work orders, safety, and many other activities. A digital twin that mirrors the physical asset can provide real-time insight into the performance from IoT data directly from the physical asset. Artificial intelligence and custom algorithms provide predictability for scenario planning, improved decisions, and risk mitigation. These capabilities can be accessed in a web browser keeping interaction relatively simple for all stakeholders. Thus, what begins effectively as a “design twin” can be eventually transitioned into an “operations twin” (Figure 2). This paper will focus on making full use of these technology tools along with other strategies for enhanced O&M input during design.
