I have been working for the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works for 8 years. During my employment I have been involved in major capital improvements projects to upgrade the City's sewer and wastewater treatment plant infrastructure. I obtained a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Cal Poly Pomona and a master's degree in structural engineering from California State University of Northridge. I have been leading the engineering section of the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant for the past two years and have loved every second of it. The plant is full of opportunities to grow and learn. Every week we work through issues to maintain our process while looking towards the future for new technologies and process improvements.

Bio-trickling Filter and Increased Corrosion Potential

Abstract

In 2017, the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant (DCTWRP) began construction on the "Blower Foul Air Clean-Up System". The intention of the project was to protect the existing blowers and other ancillary equipment by installing a system to pre-treat the collected foul air. The foul air contains corrosive moisture-laden hydrogen sulfide gas, particulate matter, dust, mists, and greasy aerosols that could plug the blower filters, coat the blower internals, and plug aeration basin diffusers. To clean up the air, a bio-trickling filter (BTF) was selected. It was found that the BTF successfully removed hydrogen sulfide; however, the plant’s blowers began to exhibit increased deterioration. To mitigate this issue, activated carbon (AC) adsorber units will be installed. This paper will discuss the specification of the BTF and AC towers; process data from the BTF operation, and investigate the cause and solution of the blower corrosion.

This paper will discuss the research which went into the specification for the BTF; provide process data during the BTF's commissioning, start up, and operation; and describe the investigation to identify the cause and solution of the blower corrosion.
