Dr. Sharmeen Hyder works as a Process Engineer-EIT for Stantec. She obtained a masters in civil engineering and a PhD degree from Toronto Metropolitan University in Civil engineering. Her Masters project was Fermentation of PS for maximizing VFAs production and PhD research on Biosolids post-treatment efficiency improvement with chemical conditioning. Dr. Sharmeen is an experienced process engineer with in-depth technical knowledge in biological wastewater treatment, primary sludge fermentation, biosolids post-treatment and quality analysis, process optimization and modelling.

Abstract

Anaerobic digestate from municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTP) contains more than 90% water. The high volume of the digestate imposes handling and disposal challenges. Often anaerobic digestate undergoes dewatering, which helps decant the water from the digestate, improves cake solid content, and reduces storage, transportation, and disposal costs. Chemical conditioning before the dewatering process facilitates solid-liquid separation that enhances the efficacy of the dewatering process. Organic polymers have wide application in MWWTPs for the enhancement of dewatering. The experiment aims to reduce the polymer dose while introducing other chemicals to improve the dewatering and quality of biosolids. Several dewatering indices such as capillary suction time (CST), Cake Solid Content, turbidity and viscosity, soluble protein, soluble polysaccharide, phosphates are measured. Cake solid content, centrate total suspended solids (TSS), and fecal coliform of the cake after centrifuge dewatering indicate biosolids quality improvement. The objective of the experiment is to optimize the cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) dose, a double chemical dose of Ferric Chloride (FeCl3), and combined chemical dose of PAM, FeCl3, and Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) doses and study its impact on biosolids quality improvement. Anaerobic digestate is conditioned using cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) alone, with a combination of Ferric Chloride (FeCl3) and cationic PAM and a combination of (FeCl3), PAM, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to find the optimum combination of chemical doses. Cationic PAM suppresses and neutralizes surface charges of digestate particles and bridge the gap between the particles to hold them in a floc structure. Overdose of the polymer may cause disaggregation, redispersion of the particles, and increase the solution's viscosity. Therefore, polymer overdose increases chemical costs, which creates the necessity to identify the optimum chemical dose. Full-scale anaerobic digestate conditioned with 0.4% and 14 kg/ton polymer doses were replicated and compared in lab-scale with 0.5% polymer. Lab-scale data achieved a 4% increase in the cake solid content and a 93% reduction in CST with optimum and lower polymer dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS. Remarkable improvement of dewatering was observed as compared to municipal anaerobic digestate when FeCl3 was added along with cationic PAM. A combination of 0.5% P with 0.5% FeCl3 exhibited a minimum CST of 5.1s and a higher cake solid content of 30% with a polymer dose of 2.2 Kg/T DS in combination with 1.0 Kg/T DS of FeCl3. Trivalent cation Fe(III) forms colloidal Ferric Hydroxide (Fe(OH)3), which acts as bridges to strengthen the aggregation between particles and reinforces polymer flocculation and polymer bridge formation. Approximately 28% reduction of phosphate concentration was achieved in anaerobic digestate at optimum polymer dose. While dual chemical conditioning 2.2 kg/ton polymer with 2.1 kg/ton DS FeCl3 improved the phosphate reduction by 50%. Along with cationic PAM and FeCl3, 3% Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was also added to observe the effect of oxidation on dewatering efficiency. Combined Polymer Dose 2.2 kg/ton DS, FeCl3 2.1 kg/ton DS and 400 mg/l H2O2 shows minimum CST 5.63s and maximum cake solid content 41%. Biosolids' quality improved in terms of solid cake content by 15% on combined chemical addition. Combined dosing of polymer, FeCl3, and H2O2 converted the fixed iron in anaerobic digestate to Fe ++ and Fe +++, which subsequently reacted and formed phosphate precipitates, further dropping the sedentary phosphorous content of anaerobic digestate by more than 50%. The experiment results confirm the effect of combined chemical addition on enhancing dewaterability for municipal anaerobic digestate. Centrate suspended solids, turbidity, and viscosity will be measured to find the optimum dual and combined dose of chemicals. Soluble protein and polysaccharides will also be measured as a measure of dewatering efficiency over optimum chemical doses. Cake fecal coliform content will also be measured to study the disinfection efficiency of H2O2 over optimum chemical amounts. Fecal coliform testing is an essential measure of biosolid's quality improvement. The Study results will confirm the enhancement of biosolids quality over combined addition of H2O2 along with cationic PAM and FeCl3, thereby improving the performance of MWWTP dewaterability.

Effect Of Combined Chemicals On Anaerobic Digestate Dewaterability

Abstract

Anaerobic digestate is conditioned using cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) alone, with the dual application of ferric chloride (FeCl3) and CPAM and a combination of FeCl3, CPAM, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). CPAM suppresses and neutralizes surface charges of digestate particles and bridge the gap between the particles to hold them in a floc structure. Overdose of the polymer may cause disaggregation, redispersion of the particles, and increase the solution's viscosity. Therefore, polymer overdose increases chemical costs, which creates the necessity to identify the optimum polymer dose. Full-scale anaerobic digestate conditioned with 0.35% and 12 to 14 kg/ton polymer doses were replicated and compared in lab-scale experiments with various doses of 0.5% CPAM. Lab-scale data achieved a 17% increase in the cake solid content and a 94% reduction in capillary suction time (CST) with an optimum and lower polymer dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS. Remarkable improvement of dewatering was observed compared to municipal anaerobic digestate when FeCl3 was added along with CPAM. A combined dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS CPAM and 1.0 kg/ton DS FeCl3 shows a minimum CST 11.8s and maximum cake solid content 30% with 94% reduction in CST and 13% increase in cake solid percent compared to those of digestate. However, a combined dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS CPAM and 1.5 kg/ton DS FeCl3 exhibits the lowest turbidity 32 NTU, 84% decrease in turbidity than digestate. A combined dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS CPAM and 2.1 kg/ton DS FeCl3 show a minimum SRF 0.24 Tmin/kg, a 99% decrease in SRF than raw digestate. Trivalent cation Fe(III) forms colloidal ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3 ) with very low solubility, which acts as bridges to strengthen the aggregation between particles and reinforces polymer flocculation and polymer bridge formation. Along with 0.5% CPAM and 0.5% FeCl3, 3% Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was also added to observe the effect of advanced oxidation on dewatering and phosphate removal efficiency. Combined dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS CPAM, 1.5 kg/ton DS FeCl3 and 400 mg/l H2O2 shows the lowest CST 5.4s and turbidity 25 NTU with a reduction of both the indices by 97% and 87.5%, respectively. Biosolids' quality improved in cake solid content by 37% with the same dose of combined chemicals. However, a combined dose of 2.9 kg/ton DS CPAM, 1.0 kg/ton DS FeCl3 and 400 mg/l H2O2 showed the lowest SRF by 0.07 Tmin/kg with a 99% reduction in SRF compared to that of digestate. Combined dosing of CPAM, FeCl3, and H2O2 converted the fixed iron (Fe) in anaerobic digestate to Fe ++ then Fe +++. Converted Fe +++ subsequently reacted and formed phosphate (PO43-) precipitates, dropping the sedentary total phosphorous (TP) content of anaerobic digestate by 77% in the sludge conditioned by the combined dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS CPAM, 1.5 kg/ton DS FeCl3 and 400 mg/l H2O2. The experiment also demonstrated a reduction of 70% of soluble reactive orthoPO43- while digestate conditioned by a combined dose of 2.2 kg/ton DS CPAM, 1.5 kg/ton DS FeCl3and H2O2 500 mg/l. The experiment results confirm the effect of combined chemical addition on enhancing dewaterability by improved CST, turbidity, SRF, and phosphorus release for municipal anaerobic digestate and improving biosolids quality by increasing the cake solid content.

Enhancing Post-Treatment Efficiency of Temperature-Phased Anaerobic Digestate Through Combined Chemical Conditioning for "Class A" Biosolids Production

Abstract

A post-treatment process is required to reduce the volume temperature-phased anaerobic digestate (TPAD), so that it can be more easily transported and disposed of. The digestate liquid fraction contains a lot of nutrients as well and biosolids might contain pathogen. Traditional dewatering process that uses expensive polymers, separates solid and liquid parts to produce condensed biosolids. Polymer conditioning focuses only on volume reduction. TPAD has a high solid content which makes dewatering difficult. Other challenges associated to digestate dewatering such as nutrient and resource recovery, odour control pathogen contamination in biosolids is not addressed in traditional polymer conditioning. It is hypothesised that metal salts as coagulant and oxidants are added along with polymer to enhance the post-treatment of TPAD that would enhance dewatering, nutrient and resource recovery and pathogen elimination in dewatered biosolids. Through the combination of chemicals, the current research seeks to increase TPAD post-treatment efficiency by improving the removal of P in the liquid fraction while producing a Phosphorus (P) rich and pathogen free class A biosolids. To compare the effects of polymer conditioning alone, conditioning with polymer with ferric chloride (FeCl3), polymer, FeCl3 along with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) before centrifugal dewatering, cationic polymer alone, combined polymer with FeCl3, and cationic polymer with FeCl3, H2O2 in a pH-controlled environment. The best combination of chemicals was 2.5 kg/t DS polymer, 2.1 kg/t dry solids (DS) FeCl3 and 600 mg/l H2O2 at pH 8.0 with the lowest turbidity 11 NTU, specific resistance to filtration (SRF) 0.08 Tm/kg, capillary suction time (CST) 11.5s. The combined chemical dose shows a 94 to 99% improvement in dewatering indices such as CST, turbidity and SRF than raw TPAD. Around 88 to 90% decrease in centrate, TS2- and PN/PS ratio was also observed that contributed to odour causing potential and increased dewatering efficiency. 100 % P removal was achieved with no P in the centrate and P rich biosolids was produced with 40% cake solid content after combined chemical conditioning. However, the fecal coliform level of raw TPAD cake from the full-scale plant exceeds the regulatory limit. The dewatered cake turned into class A biosolids with just 57 MPN/g DS fecal coliform content after combined chemical conditioning in the lab scale study. In comparison with untreated TPAD cake, pathogens were reduced 100%. Combined chemical application reduces polymer dose by 40% as well as associated cost. The novel combined chemical treatment with cationic polymer, FeCl3, and H2O2 at adjusted pH are used to enhance digestate efficiency as well as reduce costs, storage requirements, and address nutrient imbalance, pathogens, and odors that offered more sustainable management. Wastewater treatment plants are thereby recommended to adopt the novel combined chemical conditioning the synergistic chemical combination of polymer, FeCl3 and H2O2, adjusting pH at 8.0 with Ca(OH)2 for TPAD post-treatment while assessing the full scale adaptability through pilot studies.
