I am currently part of the Geosyntec Consultants family as a Senior Staff Professional in Tallahassee, where I am supporting the water and process design action group teams. I specialize in site assessment, remediation, and engineering design to help solve complex challenges faced by our clients. I earned my B.S. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Drew University in Madison, NJ. As an Honours Student I focused my research in the pharmacokinetics of potential cancer treatments, presenting my work at ACS and winning the American Institute of Chemist Undergraduate Award in 2016. Later, I earned my M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, where I focused my research in alternative energies by building a high-throughput reactor able to screen synthesized catalysts and analyze their performance for conversion of biomass into value-added chemicals and biofuel. In my free time, I love long distance running and embroidery. I am also a speaker and frequent guest at FemSTEM in Miami Country School, where I give talks and presentations to promote young girls to take interest in STEM degrees and research.

Treating High pH & Metals in Groundwater using Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Sparging

Abstract

Sodium hydroxide is a highly corrosive alkaline chemical often involved in industrial spills. Geosyntec Consultants addressed contamination at a site which operates as a chemical production and packaging facility. A release of approximately 40 gallons of 50% NaOH solution occurred in March 2012. The pH of the impacted groundwater ranged from 8 to 13 S.U., contributing to increased dissolved concentrations of arsenic, chromium, and lead. The treatment goal was a pH of 8.5 S.U. or less. Geosyntec selected a CO2 sparging system to treat elevated pH in groundwater.

This paper outlines an introduction to the project which consisted of treating high pH and heavy metals in groundwater using carbon dioxide (CO2) sparging. The paper describes the methodology for a bench treatability study, a field pilot study, and a full-scale implementation to study the efficacy of CO2 sparging. The document provides tables and figures to present the results of each stage of the project. Finally, the document discusses the results of the full-scale implementation and the advantages of utilizing CO2 sparging versus injections of weak acids to treat high pH and heavy metals concentrations in groundwater.
